The story
This is my why.
“I spent most of my life trying to become somebody. Then I became their dad, and finally understood who I wanted to be.”
I’ve lived enough different lives that sometimes they don’t feel like they belonged to the same man.
I’ve been poor. I’ve been an outlaw. I’ve been a prisoner. I’ve hurt people, loved people, lost people, and wasted years I’ll never get back.
Then I became a father.
One day my daughters are going to wonder who their dad was before he was Dad. I don’t want them left with somebody else’s version of the story.
So I write it down. I put it into books and songs. The beautiful parts and the ugly ones. The things I’m proud of and the things I wish I could undo.
I’m not trying to make the past look better. I’m trying to leave them the truth.
